The black smudge on the hill opposite is one of the (abandoned) coal mines. Svalbard is a popular spot for geologists, because all the geology is really exposed since there is basically no vegetation (it's north of the treeline). Snowmobiles are a popular way to get around in the winter. This photo was taken out of the window of my room.
