The toilet. This was the source of much confusion and amusement for us, as the water inlet (the thin pipe running in front of the big black pipe) was slated to be replaced for the whole building. This meant a lot of notes (in Russian) and visits from enthusiastic and chatty neighbors (in Russian), and a lot of panicky attempts to get a hold of our colleague who owned the apartment. Answering machines don't seem to exist in Russia. The day after the pipe was replaced, the inlet valve on the toilet jammed (rust clot broken loose??) meaning we now had to lug a 5 gallon bucket of water in to fill up the toilet to flush it. Luckily we had many of these jugs around (from the drinking water) and neither of us minded reverting to pole flushing rules.
