Zurich FAQ
Here is an extremely random and short collection of helpful things to know if one is moving
to Zurich.
- Some foods are hard to find. Check out my guide,
especially if you want to bake some brownies.
- the PhD survival guide
-
the international students
page
- There are used bike markets held all summer and the
merchendise ranges
from cheap to quite nice. Here is the 2007 schedule --search for ZH for
canton Zurich.
-
There is also
an exchange/sale board for the ETH/Uni Z
- The ETH and
University of Zurich libraries are quite extensive and have lots of
english books, although generally rather academic. There is
also the
Canton library which is accessible with an ETH library
card. All three
have
a single catalog
- There is also the privately run
community
library which costs about 40 CHF per year. They have a small collection of
english books and are also very popular place to get DVDs which are
free to borrow once you are a member.
- The best
deal in town
for language is the Migros Klubshcule
which
is sort of adult education through the Migros (which is one
of the two
grocery store chains in Switzerland).
- Comparis is a great
place to get quotes for health insurance (compulsory and
privately run
by a confusing array of hundreds of insurers) mobile phones
and other
things.
- Fantastic collection of
maps, including one with the Kreis regions identified!
